Get Started

ECCGA works with local individuals and organizations to help organize, plan, construct, plant and nourish community gardens.

Garden performance is based upon soil quality and optimum garden practices. We recommend that you start with a soil nutrient test available through the Logan Labs or University of CT Extension Service. Once the beds are created, compost and ongoing natural soil amendments continue to improve the yield.

Many small gardens begin with two or more raised beds which we can provide. A sunny, relatively flat location works best, with fresh water nearby. Many plants grow best when they have around 6 hours of sun, but a little shade is fine, especially in the hot afternoons.

There are a number of local organizations such as the UConn Extension Service and the Eastern Connecticut Conservation District who are also ready to assist.

For larger gardens, ECCGA receives grants to help develop the garden requirements such as fencing, cover cloth, and irrigation. Ideally we prefer to amend with compost and non-chemical amendments, and let the worms and microbes prepare the soil without mechanical cultivation.

If you are thinking about starting a garden, or are ready to get started, we are here to help!
